How We Found You is the sequel to Why You Were Taken and part of the When Tomorrow Calls series. It is set four years after the events in How we Found You. Kate (formally known as Kirsten) and her [sort of twins] daughter and son, Silver and Mally are living with her brother, Seth. Kate can’t shake a persistent fear that her family is under threat. And she’s right. The Resurrectors, a violent cult fueled by an apocalyptic prophecy are after Mally and they’ll do anything to get him. I liked the use of a cult in the story. At least here in the US there are enough nut jobs willing to blow and shoot things up to make them seem plausible.I really wanted to see a sequel to Why You Were Taken. The characters and setting are so well drawn and nteresting I wanted to know what happened after. This must be scary for an author. What if readers hate the sequel. If this thought went through JT Lawrence’s mind she needn’t worry. How We Found You delivers a tense psychological technological action thriller that had me reading compulsively. She writes very convincingly about the near future and populates it with characters you care about.
Kate, the main focus of the story, is a compelling character. Lawrence draws her as a woman suffering from PTSD with a nearly smothering anxiety about her children. But she is such a fiercely loving and devoted mother that when the threat actually materializes she shows her inner strength and ability to meet force with force. She’s a badass willing to kickass to protect her own. This is displayed in the excellent action scenes. I like a good action scene and Lawrence really delivers, particularly in the climax. I want to see this on screen.
How We found You is set in the near future and you are going to expect advances in technology. I appreciate how the author shows technological advances as extensions of what we already have. The reader isn’t bombarded with gee whiz stuff. Keep in mind that functioning mouse ovaries have been 3d printed in our time and what’s the natural extension of that?
Favorite characters from How We Found You return. The freelance journalist, Kekeletso (Keke) and her significant other, Marko the uber geek have significant rolls. They’re people I’d like to know. Keke in particular is central to a subplot that is going to play out in the next book, What Have We Done. Marko shows his ability ferret out information.
I should give a trigger warning here. How We Found You does have scenes of children in peril. They are well executed and integral to the story but were able to pull an OMG reaction from even a hardened reader like myself.
I have seen these books described as dystopian but I wouldn’t put them in that category. There is the odd mad scientist and a religious cult but no oppressive government or Mad Max anarchy.

How We Found You A Futuristic Dystopian Kidnapping Thriller When Tomorrow Calls Book 3 edition by JT Lawrence Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
This book was crazy. It's also crazy how many things Kate had to go through. It's like the description says "would you sacrifice your son to save your daughter?". As a mom, I don't ever want to have to find out!!
I'm going to be honest, I finished this book over a week ago and I haven't been able to write this review or pick up another book since then. There were so many things that happened that I am still trying to process it all. Kate had to go through so much. I felt so bad for her and her kids. But, even though I felt bad for her, I also knew that she would do whatever it took to get her kids back.
I highly recommend this book. It's the second in the series but I think it's better than the first. It was action packed, wild, crazy, scary at times, and just overall a good book.
I loved the first book in this series, and this was a great sequel. The plot is satisfyingly complex without being confusing (or simply a rehash of the first!). I wish the author had gone into the main character's synesthesia a little more like she did in the first book, and the character floated in a sea of PTSD for a long time before being galvanized into action. But I've never suffered from PTSD, and her struggle with it seemed realistic enough that I can't pick that nit, and anyway it probably was realistic how bad it was for her. I'm really looking forward to the third book in the series!
I have just finished this sequel and can confirm I really enjoyed it. If you enjoyed the first in the series (Why you were taken) then you will love this one too. Kate is her usual quirky self. Seth is matured. The story picks up not too long after the last one and flows on nicely. I docked one star for two minor reasons- there is an unsubtle cliffhanger at the end (can't wait for the next one) and there is repetition of the word clockologram. For some reason this bothered me. Yes ita the future and the clock is a hologram, I get that. But no one is going to call it anything other than a clock, so it seem contrived. Other than that, loved it.
Usually, with the second book in a series, it feels more like a filler book, one to tide you over for the last one. This sure wasn’t the case, it was action packed, with a storyline that was gripping.
How we Found you is the sequel to Why you were taken, a book set in the not so distant future in South Africa. I love that the futuristic elements weren’t as mind boggling as most authors tend to do. There were a lot of elements were you could actually see this happening. The story follows Kate, 4 years after the events of the previous book (GO READ IT). This book shows the lengths a mother will go to, to save her children.
A thing that really impressed me was the way Lawrence juggled a couple of characters viewpoints in this book, and I didn’t get confused or lose the thread that she weaved throughout the book. Each character had their moment that made their part in the story vital.
Lawrence had me from the very first page right through to the last one! I needed my inhaler after reading some of the scenes as they were so intense. I adore her writing style and truly think this is an author who definitely needs more recognition.
