By aggressively training to climb Mt. Fuji, the author was able to channel the experience so that it was not focused only on the physical challenge. By doing so, he was able to absorb the many facets that make up the mountain. These included the ever changing animals, birds, flowers, and trees that make Mt. Fuji their home. The author takes the reader through the lush forest at the base, then he circumnavigates around the mountain and finally claws his way up a lunar landscape to the top of Mt. Fuji to witness a breathtaking sunrise. Throughout the book, the author describes the mountain's colors, sounds, winds, temperatures and the ever changing clouds that pass around it. In this book you will see Mt. Fuji through the author's eyes and witness the Diamond Fuji that occurs only twice a year and a resplendent Red Fuji that occurs while the sun sets. You will feel the different persona's of the mountain in winter and spring and begin to sense its calm serenity on a beautiful summer's day; and its fury during an autumn storm. From this you will come to learn about the Japanese people and how Mt. Fuji has shaped them and the land they live on.

In all fairness to both author and reader, this book should have been titled My Hike Up My Fuji - and that is not a typo. Although there are some interesting details about the mountain, the author is the most prominent feature in his impressionistic rendering of the landscape. To be fair, this is made clear in the product description. And in this respect the author achieves his goal. If you find him good company then you might find his insights inspirational. A book for armchair adventurers, but of little practical use in planning a climb.Product details

Hiking Up Mt Fuji Mike Kluger Barbara Kluger 9781480219137 Books Reviews
Kluger's book is an essential field guide to anyone considering the ascent of Fuji. The detailed descriptions of vegetation, wildlife and significant way-points are invaluable. Although not a technical climbing instruction manual (which there are plenty of), Kluger's book is like having your own naturalist accompanying you and will greatly enhance this once in a life-time trip. Highly recommended.
Mike truly engages the reader to experience all the beauty Mt. Fuji has to offer. Using words, he paints a picture in your mind's eye of the spectacular views along the trail. The sky, wildlife, trees, and especially Mt. Fuji, transform from concept to reality with human characteristics that you can relate to. You too will feel more alive as you see and overcome the mental and physical challenges alongside Mike. I truly enjoyed this adventure as it brought me through feelings of awe, laughter, education, introspection, and appreciation of the Japanese people and culture. Accept his invitation, and experience Mt. Fuji for yourself as you walk "up the mountain that the Japanese people affectionately refer to as Fujiyamja". Rita S.
